Tom Rainey Trio: Combobulated
Tom Rainey è da anni batterista tra i più versatili. A suo agio nella lingua della tradizione (Fred Hersch, Joe Lovano, Carmen McRae, il suo gruppo Obbligato..) ma anche nelle forme aperte della postmodernità (Tim Berne, David Torn, Nels Cline...), raggiunge con il suo trio risultati anomali, di volta in volta più sorprendenti. Sempre affiancato da Ingrid Laubrock ai sassofoni e Mary Halvorson alla chitarra, Rainey sceglie ancora una musica totalmente improvvisata. In questo ambito è interessante distinguere una scuola "europea," in cui si coglie l'aleatorietà assoluta nel metodo e nel processo del divenire sonoro; e questa invece "americana" (benchè Laubrock sia tedesca di nascita), in cui il procedimento dell'improvvisazione senza trame tematiche non esclude un palpabile richiamo alla memoria e alla storia. Pur senza spartiti e senza riff che possano fungere da trampolino, il trio di Rainey usa però frammenti narrativi ben distesi, che accarezzano a piacimento jazz, rock elettrico e altri generi, che si smaterializzano non appena evocati.

Rispetto all'ultima prova, il formidabile Hotel Grief, i tre musicisti sembrano volersi allontanare dai loro stili più usuali. Rainey si esprime con figurazioni frantumate e con un suono quasi metallico, Laubrock con timbri spessi e abrasivi che rimandano ad Archie Shepp e a Peter Brötzmann, Halvorson con più attenzione all'arpeggio ripetitivo e a toni declamati. Credo sia importante il lavoro di post-produzione realizzato da David Torn, attorno a esecuzioni immediate, dal vivo in studio. Il lungo pezzo iniziale sembra una prova per trovare canovacci comuni ma si sviluppa invece in un muro di suono avvolgente, alla fine autoritario.

La musica che esce e rientra in qualche forma, con strappi e riprese, vive di ossessioni epidermiche, tra sogno e realtà.

Impressionano molto "Fact" e "Splay Itself," dialettiche ibride ma potenti a cavallo tra metal-rock e improvvisazioni jazzistiche.

La conclusiva "Torn Road" è una nuvola di suono in un tempo sospeso.
