Sassofonista tra i più promettenti dell’area mainstream statunitense, Mike Tucker vanta già significative collaborazioni sia nel campo della fusion (Yellow Jackets, George Duke) che sul versante più strettamente jazzistico (Joe Lovano, George Garzone).

Oltre a riflettere gli stili praticati nella sua poliedrica attività di sideman, questa sua prima incisione da leader ha tutti i pregi ed i limiti delle opere giovanili, che traggono linfa vitalissima dall’ entusiasmo e dall’esuberanza espressiva. Come nel caso di altri giovani leoni del jazz già segnalati sulle nostre pagine, anche Tucker si lascia apprezzare più per una bella sonorità aspra e granulosa che non per la cifra compositiva, risultante piuttosto derivativa nei confronti dei grandi maestri del sassofonismo moderno.

Va comunque apprezzata l’idea di suonare la propria musica in luogo dei soliti standard e lasciar spazio a proposte di arrangiamento variegate, riconducibili in larga misura al jazz elettrico degli anni ’70. Davvero ragguardevole risulta la vena ritmica e l’interplay della solida formazione che lo accompagna, in cui emerge il fraseggio incisivo dell’ottimo ancorché giovane pianista Leo Genovese.
