Rudresh Mahanthappa: Codebook
Al di là dell'intenzione d'origine, il risultato è un ottimo modern mainstream, un jazz non particolarmente innovativo, ma molto fresco e incisivo. Come contraltista Mahanthappa adotta un fraseggio scattante e veloce, con grappoli di note sgranate; il suo sound è un po' cupo nel registro medio-basso, dove ottiene la pronuncia più personale, più acidulo in quello alto. Il suo stile mobilissimo è pertanto assimilabile a quello di Arthur Blythe o dei sassofonisti groovy di scuola funky.
I partner sono quanto di meglio si possa desiderare per corroborare il clima emotivo impostato dal leader. Il batterista Dan Weiss, secco ed efficace, può ricordare Billy Hart; nel DNA del già ben noto pianista Vijay Iyer , al quale il sassofonista è legato da una collaborazione di lunga data, sembrano persistere tenacemente i geni di Hancock e Tyner; il notevole François Moutin, contrabbassista francese ma da tempo residente negli States, deriva da quella virtuosistica scuola francese che si ricollega a Scott La Faro ed Eddie Gomez.
Dopo una serie di brani prevalentemente veloci, tutti con temi ben caratterizzati, il conclusivo "My Sweetest" offre un eloquio più disteso e lirico, portando ad una serena conclusione un percorso dinamicamente sostenuto se non proprio accidentato.
