Jason Forsythe: It's About Time
It's About Time likely refers to the fact that although Jason Forsythe has been a jazz composer of note for decades, this is the first-ever recording he has released as leader of his own ensemble, in this case a world-class sextet whose heavyweight front line is manned by trumpeter Brian Lynch, tenor saxophonist Walt Weiskopf and trombonist Steve Davis.

While Forsythe wrote eight of the album's nine songs—every one of which houses much to admire and commend—the horn soloists stand even taller, delivering a series of sharp and incisive statements that repeatedly raise the ante, as does pianist Michael Weiss whenever called upon. Everyone blows with assurance and authority—and that includes the rhythm section's dynamic duo, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Andy Watson.

The ensemble sets sail under sunny skies with Forsythe's breezy "Fourth Rights" and keeps the groove meter high on "Simple Samba" and "The Professor," which precede the warmhearted ballad "It's Got to Be Sweetness" and buoyant "Probandome." Forsythe makes "Home" a charming place to live, thanks to its bright and colorful Latin-infused decor, then explores the "Outer Limits" of his largely down-the-middle pathway without wandering too far afield.

George Bassman wrote "Sentimental," a high-octane swinger based on trombonist Tommy Dorsey's familiar theme song, "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You," which sets the stage for Forsythe's opulent finale, "Sanctity," wherein he not only unlimbers his trombone but calls upon a couple of well-known guests—trumpeter Kenny Rampton and tenor Donny McCaslin—to lend a hand. Although Rampton and McCaslin add weight to the arrangement, neither one solos; in fact, no one does on the tasteful through- written piece.

This is a splendid album, quite well-written by Forsythe and superbly performed by the sextet. With one helping of the composer's delicious music so easily digested, It's About Time to ask for seconds.
