Sean Wayland: Click Track Jazz: Slave to the Machine Vols 1 & 2
Il risultato - ottenuto con il supporto di numerosi musicisti, tra i quali Wayne Krantz e Donny McCaslin - porta in sé delle considerazioni contrastanti. Da una parte ci sono molti passaggi dove possiamo ascoltare uno swing naturale, grazie alle melodie sviluppate dal piano-trio e da un'improvvisazione mai troppo rischiosa, ma certamente piacevole e di buon gusto. Dall'altra troviamo, sparsi nelle due scalette, dei momenti veramente fuori luogo, dove sono proprio i troppi spazi lasciati alle tastiere a far scivolare l'intero discorso in direzioni già ascoltate, che nel loro intento vorrebbero rinnovare un determinato canone, ma che nella sostanza non aggiungono niente di inedito, anzi.
L'unica rivisitazione in programma - il resto sono pariture del leader - è "Giant Steps" di John Coltrane, eseguita in trio da Mark Guiliana, Matt Penman e Wayland, per un risultato complessivo di relativa originalità.
