Gregg Bendian's Trio Pianissimo: Change

Fondatore e batterista, fra l'altro, del Mahavishnu Project, Gregg Bendian si cimenta questa volta nella difficile arte del piano-trio. Con Steve Hunt al pianoforte e John Lockwood al contrabbasso, il leader ha allestito una formazione brillante ma non originalissima, volta inevitabilmente a richiamare alcuni dei più importanti modelli pianistici del jazz moderno. Sia sul versante compositivo che su quello della pratica musicale, le sue composizioni ruotano in un’orbita composita, che tocca diversi pianeti: tra tutti Cecil Taylor e Paul Bley, oltre agli immancabili Monk ed Evans.

A dispetto di quanto la denominazione del trio lasci supporre, prevale nel disco un andamento vibrante e magnetico del flusso sonoro. Che pur costituito in larga misura da gustose soluzioni informali, lascia anche spazio alle progressioni armoniche delicate e rarefatte (“Glancing”), fino a citare il camerismo europeo. Ci sono poi le annunciate virate in pianissimo, ma è il brano finale ("Torrents") a connotare la cifra stilistica di questa formazione, grazie ad un travolgente caleidoscopio di marca espressionista. Dove riluce a tutto tondo il drumming irregolare e frammentato del leader.
