Una suite di sessantadue minuti suddivisa in otto movimenti, è questo il campo di gioco sul quale Matthew Shipp e Joe Morris giocano la loro partita a a scacchi. Perché Broken Partials è tutto un muovere di pedine, di mosse ardite, di spostamenti improvvisi, di ribaltamenti imprevisti, di strategie sofisticate. E di grande musica.

Una registrazione adeguata, realizzata al Roulette di New York, porta in superficie tutta la profondità acustica degli strumenti esplorati con grande tecnica e sensibilità dai due maestri. In Thesis, album Hatology del 1998, i due avevano già dialogato con grande perizia, anche se in quell'occasione Morris era impegnato alla chitarra acustica ed elettrica. Qui, invece, l'innovativo musicista originario di New Haven imbraccia il contrabbasso dal quale estrae una sonorità profonda, ricca di risonanze, un recupero della classicità messa al servizio di un fraseggio sempre in tensione e pronto ad inserirsi nei pertugi resi possibili dalla trama esecutiva.

Quando Morris opera con l'archetto la matrice contemporanea prende il sopravvento, senza esagerazioni, con delicatezza e pudore, costringe Shipp ad inerpicarsi per sentieri impervi e sconosciuti che raggiungono quasi sempre vette di sublime bellezza.

Shipp, per l'appunto, che ancora una volta, se ce ne fosse bisogno, conferma di essere uno dei maestri assoluti degli ottantotto tasti. Pianista che ha assorbito e metabolizzato l'intera storia dello strumento, Shipp ha elaborato nel corso degli anni uno stile unico, personale e immediatamente riconoscibile. Dalla lezione di Monk e Cecil Taylor, di Bud Powell e Paul Bley ha tratto linfa vitale per aprirsi alle suggestioni delle scale della musica indiana, all'essenzialità di certo minimalismo di stampo americano, al fascino della musica contemporanea.

Il controllo sulla tastiera è pressoché assoluto, l'uso delle dinamiche geniale. Poderosi cluster si alternano a delicatissimi interludi giocati sul filo di una sotterranea tensione, intricati grovigli di note lasciano spazio a momenti di calma apparente, ossessivi bordoni provenienti dalla parte bassa della tastiera si sposano magnificamente con acuti di cristallina purezza.

Disco superbo, da ascoltare e riascoltare.
