Transvalue: Book III - The '58 Retractable Hardtop

Difficilmente etichettabile questo Book III dei Transvalue, gruppo che il trombonista Michael Vlaktovich e il poeta e vocalist Chick Britt tengono assieme, con cadenze irregolari, da quasi trent'anni. L'aria che si respira è marcatamente zappiana, anche se le atmosfere musicali sono spesso prossime alle moderne big band. All'interno vi respirano jazz e poesia, pop e reading, assoli jazzistici non privi di forte lirismo e caos sfrenato, coretti tra l'ironico e il malinconico, passaggi di grande spessore.

Difficile, se non impossibile, capire a quando risalgano le registrazioni, dato che Horiuchi, Sabatino e Turner, pur prendendo parte all'impresa, sono ormai scomparsi da tempo (ed infatti il lavoro è dedicato alla loro memoria), ma anche questo rientra nel clima caoticamente ri-creativo del lavoro.

Impressionante l'uso delle percussioni in brani come "Wars for the Numb"; spassosi i cori di "Wedding Song" o nella title track, così come tutti i reading di Britt; notevoli gli assoli di Vlatkovich, ma anche quello di Vinny Golia nella traccia d'apertura. Più in generale, il lavoro rimanda ad altri tempi, agli anni '60 e '70, quando le provocazioni artistico-politiche avevano ben altra recezione di quella che hanno oggi, e va ascoltato senza tenerne conto, per non guastare l'effetto offerto dai calembour sonori e vocali che ne costituiscono l'essenza. E che sono senza dubbio gustosissimi.
