Paul Motian: Bill Evans
Le composizioni di Bill Evans erano una sintesi di ricercatezza armonica, felicità melodica e sottile tensione ritmica e Paul Motian, che fu a lungo al suo fianco, ne rispettò l'identità, sviluppandone al contempo le implicite possibilità espressive.
L'ingresso nel trio di Marc Johnson non era casuale: Motian non voleva riprodurre l'interplay del trio e preferì cambiare organico per trovare nuovi equilibri.
Nel brano d'apertura "Show-Type Tune" il delicato disegno melodico viene affidato alle impalpabili armonie friselliane ma dopo poche battute l'atmosfera cambia con l'ingresso di Lovano e degli altri che improvvisano con energia fino alla fine. Se in "Turn Out the Stars" la linearità melodica è rispettata in pieno, esaltata dalla calda espressività e dalle nuances di Lovano, in altri momenti il lavoro si fa spericolato: un chiaro esempio è "Five," dalla chiara identità free. In "Time Remembered," "Very Early" o "Re:Person I Knew" gli equilibri ritmici e timbrici assumono connotazioni superbe, coniugando i sinuosi e malinconici assoli di Frisell e Lovano con il liberissimo e frastagliato drumming di Lovano.
Conclude la commovente versione di "Children's Play Song".
Un disco avvincente e fondamentale, tra le opere migliori di quel decennio.
