Terzo CD del trio del pianista norvegese Tord Gustavsen (dopo Changing Places e The Ground), questo At Home è un lavoro intimistico e rarefatto ma che, pur inserendosi nella tradizione nordica, vi immette alcune interessanti variabili.

In primo luogo, nel trio appare più rilevante il ruolo della batteria rispetto a quello rivestito dal contrabbasso; poi, le tracce sono tutte caratterizzate da un certo melodismo, che fa da ancoraggio all'esplorazione dei meri suoni; infine, fanno da “paletti” allo sviluppo dell'album alcuni brani di ispirazione liturgica - in forma di inno o di corale, come in “Vesper”, forse la traccia più suggestiva del lavoro - improntando in tal modo l'atmosfera generale.

Non mancano peraltro vere e proprie citazioni del primo Jarrett ("Blessed Feet"), pure improvvisazioni ("Interlude", per piano solo), brani quasi impressionistici (le tracce di apertura e chiusura) e altri più dinamici ("Where We Went") - in una varietà che stempera l'uniformità stilistica.

Ottime le performance dei due partner di Gustavsen, Harald Johnsen al contrabbasso (purtroppo un po' sottoutilizzato) e il sensibilissimo Jarle Vespestad alla batteria. Quanto al pianista, netto e sicuro nel tocco, è apprezzabile soprattutto per la sua persuasività tanto nelle situazioni più astratte e delicate, quanto in quelle più intense.

Ottimo nella realizzazione per suoni e interplay, il lavoro è complessivamente interessante, anche se manca forse di una punta di mordente che lo avrebbe reso eccellente.
