Ada Rave & Marta Warelis: Peel/Mondo

Read "Peel/Mondo" reviewed by John Sharpe

by John Sharpe

On Peel/Mondo, two distinctive voices sport in adventurous communion. Polish pianist Marta Warelis and Argentinean saxophonist Ada Rave first met as part of the fertile Amsterdam scene. As a result, they know each other well, so the empathy and highly attuned responsiveness they display on these six collective inventions from a 2024 concert performance comes as little surprise. Rave's singular approach has graced outfits as diverse as the Kaja Draksler Octet, all-women supergroup Hearth and venerable Dutch punk ...

Sofia Borges: The Unseen Pact

Read "The Unseen Pact" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

by Hrayr Attarian

German percussionist Sofia Borges explores unique time signatures in her work, drawing on an eclectic range of influences. Meanwhile, Argentinian saxophonist Ada Rave is a dynamic improviser. A deep sensitivity beautifully balances her bold, striking style. The stimulating The Unseen Pact is the result of Borges and Rave's poignant collaboration. It showcases a deep camaraderie and a shared artistic vision. “What the Earth Remembers" sets the spiritual mood for this release. Borges' sparse, thundering beats create an expectant ...

Ada Rave / Aaron Lumley / Onno Govaert: Bioluminus

Read "Bioluminus" reviewed by Mark Corroto

by Mark Corroto

We can no longer refer to the music and creative Amsterdam scene with the title coined by author Kevin Whitehead as the New Dutch Swing. His 1998 book of the same name described the origins of the free jazz movement in The Netherlands and its now legendary masters such as Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, Eric Boeren, Ab Baars, Ig Henneman, Ernst Reijseger and Wilbert De Joode. Maybe a better label could be New Dutch Kings & Queens, as ...

Hearth: Melt

Read "Melt" reviewed by John Sharpe

by John Sharpe

Four of the most exciting young improvisers on the European scene assemble for the first time under the name Hearth. In a cosmopolitan roster overflowing with talents who each possess a distinctive individual voice, Amsterdam-based Argentinean reedplayer Ada Rave joins with the Copenhagen-domiciled Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler, Stockholm-located Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and Trondheim-resident Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen. While improv sessions often thrive on no-holds-barred expression, it really is the collective which is the star on Melt.

Kaja Draksler Octet: Out for Stars

Read "Out for Stars" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero

by Vincenzo Roggero
