Sofia Borges: The Unseen Pact

View read count
German percussionist Sofia Borges explores unique time signatures in her work, drawing on an eclectic range of influences. Meanwhile, Argentinian saxophonist Ada Rave is a dynamic improviser. A deep sensitivity beautifully balances her bold, striking style. The stimulating The Unseen Pact is the result of Borges and Rave's poignant collaboration. It showcases a deep camaraderie and a shared artistic vision.

"What the Earth Remembers" sets the spiritual mood for this release. Borges' sparse, thundering beats create an expectant ambience. Rave, on sopranino saxophone, blows angular, soulful melodies that contrast with and complement the drummer's percolating polyrhythms. The agile saxophone lines in this high register lend the music an eastern tinge.

These motifs continue on the sombre "Sudden Spark," where serenity gives way to a spirited conversation. Whether soloing or engaged in dialogue, the pair deftly uses silent pauses to underscore their extemporizations. The tune builds to a delightfully riotous repartee before fading into relative quietude.

Elsewhere, on the haunting "Ritual Unmade," Borges' small instruments rustle evocatively while Rave's tenor softly moans in response. The duet evolves into a series of crisp, lithe exchanges that shimmer with incandescent hues. The saxophone's brief, punchlike phrases bounce off Boirges' complex and dynamic cadence like a series of explosions. The track is simultaneously fiery and lyrical, and above all, thrillingly synergistic.

The passionate and melancholic "What the Fire Forgot" is an apt conclusion to this provocative album—Rave's long, wistful refrains shimmer against Borges' splashing cymbals. Together, the two artists spontaneously compose a modern tone poem with a dramatic atmosphere. Borges lets loose an intriguing cascade of percussive tones with panache, while Rave's tenor wails and twitters. Thus, together the two musicians build the recording's contemplative finale.

The Unseen Pact is a mesmerizing meeting of the minds. It is brilliant and moving with a deep sense of mysticism. Hence, it makes for an emotive and rewarding listening experience. It is a perfect example of harmonious, imaginative improvisation.
