Ada Rave

Ada Rave is an Argentinian saxophonist, improviser and composer. Ada’s instrumental approach is based on research into a wide variety of techniques, conventional and unorthodox, which allow her to create a highly personal narrative in real time composition. In addition to her ability to perform with an incredible degree of abstraction, she also boasts one of the boldest tenor sounds around.
As a young child, Ada grew up in rural Patagonia before moving to Buenos Aires where she finished her primary education and began performing as a musician. She was an active part of the local jazz scene but became interested in improvised music and composition quite early, which led her to lead ensembles of her own that performed at venues and festivals all over Argentina. In 2013, she decided to move to Europe to explore the rich field of free improvisation scenes and to learn more about the possibilities of this music. Based in Amsterdam she immediately integrated the improvised music community. Ada has become one of the most in demand saxophonists on the scene. She’s performed throughout Europe solo and with her trio, as well as in various projects including Hearth, the Kaja Draksler Octet and The Ex. Ada is also active as a music educator and organizer of the series Impro Jam at De Ruimte. In September 2019 she became part of the internationally acclaimed DOEK collective.

Ada Rave / Aaron Lumley / Onno Govaert: Bioluminus

Read "Bioluminus" reviewed by Mark Corroto

We can no longer refer to the music and creative Amsterdam scene with the title coined by author Kevin Whitehead as the New Dutch Swing. His 1998 book of the same name described the origins of the free jazz movement in The Netherlands and its now legendary masters such as Misha Mengelberg, Willem Breuker, Han Bennink, Eric Boeren, Ab Baars, Ig Henneman, Ernst Reijseger and Wilbert De Joode. Maybe a better label could be New Dutch Kings & Queens, as ...

Hearth: Melt

Read "Melt" reviewed by John Sharpe

Four of the most exciting young improvisers on the European scene assemble for the first time under the name Hearth. In a cosmopolitan roster overflowing with talents who each possess a distinctive individual voice, Amsterdam-based Argentinean reedplayer Ada Rave joins with the Copenhagen-domiciled Slovenian pianist Kaja Draksler, Stockholm-located Portuguese trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and Trondheim-resident Danish saxophonist Mette Rasmussen. While improv sessions often thrive on no-holds-barred expression, it really is the collective which is the star on Melt.

Kaja Draksler Octet: Out for Stars

Read "Out for Stars" reviewed by Vincenzo Roggero
