Vandermark 5: Annular Gift
In questo senso il percorso dei Vandermark 5 è probabilmente quello più emblematico, per la continuità dell'esperienza e la capacità di riformulare costantemente i parametri espressivi del quintetto. Da qualche anno la cosiddetta "nuova" line-up ha acquisito la massima coesione e il violoncello di Fred Lonberg-Holm svolge ormai costantemente un ruolo di ago magnetico mutante in una bussola ansiosa di piegarsi oltre le frontiere.
Non a caso è proprio il suono del violoncello, aggressivo come una chitarra elettrica o spettrale come nella più rigorosa ricerca timbrica contemporanea, a mettersi in luce nella lunga "Spiel" che apre il nuovo lavoro dei Vandermark 5.
Registrato dal vivo in quella che sta diventando un po' la seconda patria del gruppo, la Polonia, e pubblicato dalla Not Two, Annular Gift è un nuovo eccellente tassello nel mosaico del gruppo di Chicago e testimonia un grado di maturità del quintetto che va di pari passo con il felicissimo momento di Vandermark come compositore.
Oltre alla fluviale traccia di apertura infatti, il musicista sa scrivere un questo disco temi e strutture [come sempre muniti di dedica specifica] dalle interessantissime architetture, pronti a piegarsi alle linee dei solisti. In questo senso va rimarcata anche la prova dello stesso Vandermark e del suo "gemello diverso" Dave Rempis, capaci di mettere le voci delle rispettive ance a servizio del progetto complessivo.
C'è blues, c'è libertà, c'è senso delle forme, c'è energia, c'è groove, c'è obliquità nella musica dei Vandermark 5 e questo nuovo lavoro ne è una testimonianza vibrante, oltre che godibilissima.
Già, parlando di Ken Vandermark si rischia a volte di ripetersi!
