Eliot Cardinaux: American Thicket

Fra composizione (anche poetica) e libera improvvisazione, il giovane pianista (e poeta, appunto) Eliot Cardinaux si affida alle cure, fra gli altri, di un musicista decisamente avvezzo a contesti del genere come Mat Maneri per realizzare questo che è il primo album interamente a suo nome (l'incisione risale all'aprile 2014).

In realtà l'operazione riesce solo in parte, perché se i recitativi penalizzano come quasi sempre accade la fluidità dell'opera, appesantendola e incupendola (complice la dizione tutt'altro che dinamica, articolata, di Cardinaux), la stessa musica sembra vagare abbastanza nell'indefinito, ascendendo ben di rado ad epifanie che ne amplino lo spettro sonoro (è quanto accade per esempio in segmenti di "Angel," "The Stranger's Song," "Interlude" e "Radio Dues."), francamente a sua volta fin troppo sommesso, scarno, sabbioso, monocorde.

Un disco, in definitiva, in cui succede un po' troppo poco, pur non mancando tutto l'insieme di un suo fascino, scuro, compresso, ovattato. Persino un po' sinistro.
