Joe Moffett's Ad Faunum: Ad Faunum

Sta sviluppandosi tra Brooklyn e Boston una nidiata di giovani improvvisatori che si ispirano in maniera particolare al lavoro di Joe Maneri, il geniale saxofonista scomparso alcuni anni fa. Ne fanno certamente parte musicisti come il trombettista Joe Moffett, il saxofonista Noah Kaplan, i bassisti Giacomo Merega e Jacob William e per finire il batterista Luther Gray. Senza dimenticare il più maturo chitarrista e bassista Joe Morris che non suona in questo album ma che di sicuro ha dato uno sguardo benigno e magari anche qualche buona dritta.

La musica di Ad Faunum è completamente improvvisata dell'esecuzione e si struttura in sei brani che prendono come ispirazione il fauno, l'essere mezzo uomo, mezza capra che simboleggia il lato animale che risiede dentro di noi, un invito a guardare le cose con un occhio ancestrale, forse proprio per scoprire dove potrebbe portarci il futuro. Una semplice intuizione progettuale che tinge in maniera curiosa questo album e il nome del gruppo stesso, a cominciare dalla bella copertina e dai titoli delle sei improvvisazioni.

L'elemento strutturale più interessante di questo album è la presenza di due bassisti, uno alle prese con lo strumento acustico, l'altro con la variante elettrica. Quest'ultimo ruolo è ottimamente ricoperto dal genovese trapiantato a New York Giacomo Merega, assiduo collaboratore del sassofonista Noah Kaplan e titolare di un ottimo album, The Light and Other Things, con Kaplan e David Tronzo.
