Deep Rumba: A Calm in the Fire of Dances

Anche se Kip Hanrahan si tiene un po' in disparte, è del tutto evidente che la sua mente creativa è il motore vero di questo gruppo denominato Deep Rumba che firma con A Calm in the Fire of Dances il secondo album, dopo l'ottimo This Night Becomes a Rumba registrato e pubblicato nel 1998.

A Calm in the Fire of Dances è stato invece registrato fra la fine del 1999 e l'inizio del 2000 e New York sembra l'Avana, con i ritmi prorompenti che ti aspetteresti di ascoltare arrivando sul Malecon. Cuba è davvero la chiave perfetta per interpretare questa musica, con la sua vitalità, la sua povertà apparente vissuta con grande dignità ed allegria. Con la sua cultura vera e intensa, per nulla plasticosa, per nulla occidentale.

Ci sono poi gli elementi esterni come il sax di Charles Neville, che lanciano segnali nella direzione di New Orleans, come il violino di Antonio Triff che guarda oltre l'oceano, come la produzione cinematica di Kip Hanrahan che riposiziona il tutto al centro del Bronx, ma alla fine è l'isola caraibica a fornire il tessuto connettivo di base, con le percussioni, le voci, l'energia, i colori. Con la vita, insomma. Quella vera, quella pulsante, quella reale che niente vuole avere a che spartire con la Cuba da cartolina. Lasciamola risplendere sotto al sole del ritmo.
