Estendendo a tutti i pezzi di questo album la tessitura musicale esplorata in qualche brano del precedente Awake (2008), Miguel Zenon recupera il mirabile esempio di third-stream che aveva innervato negli anni Sessanta Focus di Stan Getz. Il fine è quello di dare un respiro diverso alle sincopi ed agli elementi ritmici afro-caraibici della sua formazione, mettendo in campo con profitto una apertura mentale e una disposizione al rischio non comuni nel mondo discografico di oggi.
A seconda dei gusti o della formazione culturale di chi lo ascolta, Yo soy la tradicion può suscitare giudizi contrastanti. Può sembrare stucchevole ai cultori della tradizione musicale latino americana in clave, fantasiosa per quanti prediligono il connubio oggi di moda fra jazz e musica eurocolta.
