Samuel Torres: Yaoundé

Dopo alcune esperienze che lo hanno portato a conoscere realtà di diverso genere - dagli inizi alla corte di Shakira alla lunga militanza nella band di Arturo Sandoval - il percussionista e compositore colombiano Samuel Torres dà alle stampe il suo secondo lavoro da leader, Yaoundé, ispirato da un viaggio in Africa intrapreso qualche anno fa.

Tredici i brani autografi in programma - alcuni con tanto di dedica, al proprio amore, alla nonna, o ai grandi musicisti di salsa del passato -, più il traditional "Ronca el canalete," dove si vanno a incrociare con successo le correnti melodiche dal sapore latino, le fantasie ritmiche del leader e le sonorità aderenti al jazz mainstream. Questo perché Torres - forte, soprattutto, di una scrittura dalle ampie vedute - è riuscito a mettere insieme una band caleidoscopica, dove compare il pianismo ordinato di Manuel Valera, l'eleganza di due fiatisti di alto livello come Joel Frahm e Michael Rodriguez, il basso vibrante e all'occorrenza funky di John Benitez.

Le percussioni svolgono un ruolo decisivo nei meccanismi che muovono i brani di Yaoundé, dal momento che Torres dà fondo a un armamentario di tutto rispetto - dalle congas alla tambora colombiana, all'udu e al djembe - , ma a determinare la buona riuscita di questo progetto è il modo con il quale è riuscito a intrecciare le sue radici, stilistiche e culturali, con i fili più marcatamente jazzistici.
