Ab Baars - Meinrad Kneer: Windfall

L'etichetta gestita dal pianista olandese Albert van Veenendaal pubblica questo CD, che è stato registrato in due diverse sedute nel gennaio e dicembre 2008. Tutte le composizioni sono attribuite congiuntamente a Baars e a Kneer; il che fa supporre che si tratti di libere improvvisazioni. All'ascolto però molti brani sembrano basarsi su tracce concordate, su semplici indicazioni grafiche o verbali, tali da indirizzare l'interplay e l'andamento dei percorsi musicali. Si avverte infatti il susseguirsi di situazioni ben caratterizzate e diversificate, ora dalla pronuncia forzata e ruvida tipicamente derivate dal free, ora più vicine allo spirito di certa musica contemporanea degli anni Sessanta-Settanta.

I brani si qualificano quindi come composizioni istantanee: episodi di decantata riflessione lasciano il posto a impennate scontrose o a frementi declamazioni. "Insinuated Instability" per esempio, in cui Baars imbocca il clarinetto con una pronuncia pulita, propone una pacata meditazione, mentre in "The Pledge" le note lunghe e tremule del tenore, in un continuo crescendo di registro, sembrano elevare un'invocazione esasperata. In ogni caso gli aspetti strutturali e timbrici prevalgono sempre su quelli melodici o ritmici, tradizionalmente intesi.

Baars dispiega tutta la ricchezza del suo linguaggio, in cui la sonorità si connette al disegno costruttivo del fraseggio, anzi sembra generarlo. Il contrabbassista si dimostra partner attento e congeniale del più noto sassofonista: il suo procedere è dinamicamente variato, scuro e umorale sia all'archetto che al pizzicato.
