Il progetto Warriors nasce da un'idea del trombettista e arrangiatore David Weiss, fondatore del New Jazz Composers Octet. Ha riunito sette maestri legati alla stagione del jazz anni Sessanta-Settanta, in particolare a quella fusione di hard bop, free e modale ben rappresentata da Coltrane, Woody Shaw, Hubbard e da molta produzione Blue Note. Guerrieri perché esponenti di un jazz che non ha seguito le strade più agibili sul piano commerciale e/o dell'apprezzamento critico, col risultato di produrre musica assai durevole, in quanto legata alla reale evoluzione del linguaggio, in rapporto ai tempi e alla prassi condivisa. Hanno pagato un prezzo, finendo nell'ampia schiera dei musicisti trascurati, anche se apprezzati e richiesti da tutti gli addetti ai lavori.

Il loro incontro va ben oltre la jam di lusso, frequente esito di tanti supergruppi. L'insieme delle loro voci è strutturato in arrangiamenti notevoli, opera di Weiss con l'esclusione di "Priestess" e "Capra Black" scritti e orchestrati da Billy Harper. La sonorità d'assieme ricorda gli arrangiamenti di Eric Dolphy per Africa Brass e quelli di Shorter per The Body and the Soul di Hubbard, ma anche Oliver Nelson e George Russell.

Si va dall'impatto dell'iniziale "The Core" (quando un lavoro approfondito sul songbook di Freddie Hubbard?), alle trame delicate delle composizioni di George Cables, pianista delizioso e grande accompagnatore di Art Pepper nei suoi ultimi anni di vita. Billy Harper scrive e improvvisa con immutata urgenza espressiva, McBee ha uno dei suoni di contrabbasso più profondi e possenti nel jazz e offre una scrittura dal bel respiro melodico. L'agile nitore del linguaggio di Henderson, il canto mingusiano del contralto di Handy e la grande scuola ritmica di Hart, completano un lavoro di cui Weiss può essere fiero. Non guasta un'eccellente ripresa del suono.
