Wadada Leo Smith / Vijay Iyer, Perelman / McPhee / Vandermark & Michael Gregory Jackson

Click the play button to listen

This episode of One Man's Jazz is loaded with introductions to new albums by a remarkable group of musicians. Heading the list is the duet of Wadada Leo Smith and Vijay Iyer. Their new Defiant Life, not their first time playing together, speaks to the current state of the world and finding possible paths to liberation. Don't pass this one up. Saxophonist Ivo Perelman continues releasing new albums at a torrid pace and his two partners on the new Oxygen, Ken Vandermark and Joe McPhee, know a thing or two about torrid. Two guitarists with legendary status highlight this playlist—guitar mentor and spiritual guide Tisziji Munoz leads the Quantum Blues quartet in a blues-inflected modal album that also features Paul Shaffer (yeah, that guy), while Michael Gregory Jackson is back with an expanded version of his Frequency Equilibrium Koan Expanded. He found a new and better tape of a '70s Loft Scene performance. Joe McPhee shows up on bassist Michael Bisio and pianist Eunhye Jeong's first album together, saxophonist Eric Shorter makes his debut, and you'll hear music as usual from around the globe: bassist Maximillian Alduca & Quintet and the Alister Spence trio from Australia, Ireland's Michael Buckley Quartet, Skordatura from Belgium, Danish pianist Anders Filipsen, drummer Nils Agnas from Sweden, and the Scottish duo of Italian bassist Roberto Cassani and guitarist Graeme Stephen. They compare the music on their new Pictish Spaghetti to a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western set in Pictish territory.
