Iro Haarla Quintet: Vespers

Giunta al suo secondo lavoro da leader, dopo avere militato per anni nelle formazioni guidate dal marito, il batterista Edward Vesala prematuramente scomparso nel 1999, la pianista/arpista e compositrice finlandese Iro Haarla conferma la buona impressione suscitata cinque anni fa con l'album d'esordio, Northbound. Non cambiano gli accompagnatori, un quintetto completato da vecchi e giovani leoni del jazz norvegese, a cominciare dal veterano batterista Jon Christensen, per finire col giovane trombettista Mathias Eick, oltre al sassofonista Trygve Seim e al contrabbassista Ulf Krokfurs.

Anche la musica mantiene tutte le caratteristiche che avevano costituito l'album d'esordio, facendolo rientrare in quello che viene definito spesso (peraltro molto vagamente) il mainstream ECM. Le composizioni, tutte firmate dalla Haarla, sono ariose e elegiache, caratterizzate da un senso di sospensione che crea un'atmosfera di velata malinconia, soprattutto negli interventi solistici dei due fiati. La musica è di taglio descrittivo, creatrice di suggestioni a cui l'ascoltatore può abbandonarsi apprezzando il valido e raffinato lavoro di scrittura e arrangiamento.

Un album che piacerà sicuramente soprattutto agli estimatori del "suono ECM," mentre potrà risultare statico e ripetitivo per chi non apprezza certe atmosfere; meritevole, in ogni caso, di un ascolto attento e non casuale.
