Miroslav Vitous: Universal Syncopations II

Il titolo dato dal bassista Miroslav Vitous al suo ultimo lavoro, Universal Syncopations II, risulta decisamente fuorviante; non si tratta infatti di un seguito al disco del 2003, col quale non presenta nulla in comune se non gli studi di incisione (appunto, gli Universal Syncopations Studios). Pertanto, chi si aspettasse un'altra esaltante blowing sessions tra cinque dei più grandi musicisti di jazz moderno, com'era il precedente Universal Syncopations, rimarrebbe sicuramente deluso.

Siamo in presenza di un'opera ben più ambiziosa: musica per gruppo, orchestra e coro composta, archiviata, arrangiata, diretta e prodotta da Miroslav Vitous (come recitano le note di copertina). Il gruppo di base è costituito da un trio col contrabbassista, il sassofonista Gary Campbell e il batterista Gerald Cleaver, sostituito nel primo brano da Adam Nussbaum, ai quali si aggiungono occasionalmente i sassofonisti Bob Mintzer e Bob Malach, il trombettista Randy Brecker e il bandoneonista Daniele di Bonaventura.

Purtroppo, il risultato non sempre è all'altezza delle ambizioni e delle aspettative, forse eccessive. La musica patisce una certa pesantezza, dovuta a una scrittura che nella continua ricerca di drammaticità imbriglia troppo i solisti e rallenta eccessivamente il fluire dello sviluppo narrativo.

Non mancano tuttavia diversi momenti riusciti, come nell'iniziale 'Opera', sostenuta dal drumming swingante di Nussbaum, e in 'Universal Evolution', dove l'interazione tra coro, orchestra e gruppo raggiunge i suoi massimi livelli, o nella delicata 'Mediterranean Love' col contributo di Di Bonaventura.

Il lavoro richiede diversi ascolti attenti per svelare tutte le sue qualità, soffrendo soprattutto di un diffuso cerebralismo che penalizza l'immediatezza della fruizione. Merita comunque attenzione, se non altro per l'originalità di una proposta fuori dai consueti schemi.
