Nel corso della sua trentennale carriera solistica, Steve Hackett (noto ai più come chitarrista dei Genesis dal 1971 al 1977) ha alternato l'uso della chitarra elettrica e di quella acustica, mostrando spesso il suo retroterra classico in album come Bay of Kings e Momentum, realizzati negli anni '80 sullo strumento con le corde di nylon, e con il solo contributo supplementare del fratello John, flautista, o il più recente There Are Many Sides to The Night registrato live a Palermo.

Ultimamente, l'utilizzo della chitarra classica ha assunto un'importanza crescente nella sua musica, fino a sfociare nella realizzazione di due ambiziose composizioni estese per chitarra e orchestra, e approdare infine a questo album, concepito come un omaggio al suo strumento e a quei compositori ed esecutori che ne hanno fissato il repertorio nella prima metà del ventesimo secolo. In particolare, Andres Segovia, cui si deve il merito di aver elevato la chitarra al rango di strumento da concerto, e aver stimolato per essa la produzione di un'ampia letteratura musicale, sia attraverso composizioni originali per la sua interpretazione, che con proprie trascrizioni.

Anche se ogni brano del programma scelto è un tributo dedicato al suo compositore (fanno eccezione i tre brani composti da Hackett, dedicati rispettivamente a Segovia, a Rodrigo e ai Tudor), è proprio il maestro spagnolo il destinatario principale di questo omaggio, evidente sia nella scelta del repertorio (basato in larga parte su Bach, compresa la monumentale Ciaccona dalla Partita BWV1004 per violino solo, di cui Segovia è stato grande trascrittore e interprete), che del timbro stesso della registrazione, volto a ricreare il suono tipico delle incisioni storiche degli anni '20 e '30.

Hackett si cala nel ruolo di chitarrista classico con umiltà e passione, dimostrandosi interprete efficace e diligente, nonché autore ispirato e colto, pur se privo di una personalità spiccata, e decisamente conservatore nell'approccio al materiale. Il disco rappresenta una parentesi speciale nella sua discografia, utile per approfondire alcune delle sue radici musicali, e magari per avvicinare al mondo della chitarra classica quei fan che lo conoscono solo sotto l'aspetto di musicista rock.
