Uscito nel mese di giugno insieme a New Moon in the Evil Age del duo Janel & Anthony, questo To March Is to Love presenta una formazione dal nome intrigante di Ensemble Volcanic Ash nella quale al duo sopra menzionato si aggiungono un basso, una batteria e ben due sassofoni. Registrato live in un solo giorno con la supervisione di Curtis Fye e con il mixaggio di Mike Reina—vero e proprio valore aggiunto dell'incisione—To March is to Love cattura tutta l'energia del sestetto.

Un'energia camaleontica in grado di modificare l'impatto sonoro, di variare le dinamiche, di scivolare da impasti timbrici di stampo cameristico ai groove tipici del jazz-rock, da ingannevoli innocui valzerini a complicati grovigli sonori, da una scrittura aperta a libere improvvisazioni precise come una partitura.

È un viaggio che attraversa territori diversi, ora di accecante luminosità ora di seriosa classicità, accomunati dalla ricerca di un linguaggio originale e riconoscibile e da un'attenzione ai dettagli tutt'altro che stucchevole. Ogni brano ha una piccola grande storia da raccontare e nonostante la presenza di forti personalità, con il violoncello di Leppin che funge discretamente da guida, il sestetto si muove e respira come un unico organismo.

Una nota particolare merita la mini suite che dà il titolo all'album, undici minuti di pura bellezza, giorno e notte che si specchiano, riflettono umori contrastanti e fusioni timbriche insospettabili. Sorprendente l'omaggio finale al violoncellista Pablo Casals, una delle fonti primarie di ispirazione per Janel Leppin, qui impegnata al pianoforte, strumento dove mostra personalità da vendere anche lontana dal suo inseparabile violoncello.
