John Abercrombie: The Third Quartet

Terzo album per questo stellare quartetto, sulla carta capitanato dal chitarrista John Abercrombie (autore di quasi tutte le composizioni), ma di fatto assolutamente paritetico con Mark Feldman al violino, Marc Johnson al contrabbasso e Joey Baron alla batteria. Del resto, quando ci si confronta con musicisti di questo calibro, tutte stelle di prima grandezza del firmamento jazz, è impossibile (e forse sterile ed inutile) assegnare la leadership della band al singolo musicista. Mai come in questo caso il risultato è infatti frutto che va ben al di là della somma dei suoi singoli componenti.

Detto questo, ovvero che siamo su livelli di assoluta eccellenza, è anche vero che musicisti di questo livello portano ad elevare le nostre aspettative, ad “alzare l'asticella”. Viene quindi naturale cercare il precorso evolutivo rispetto agli album precedenti. Cercare la magia, il quid indescrivibile.

Ma la magia, in questo album, non c'è. Si intravede nel brano di apertura, un pedale molto aperto, che i quattro suonano con la giusta cattiveria. Poi, nulla che non sia già rintracciabile nei due precedenti album del quartetto. Solo buona musica. Che, con i tempi che corrono, è già molto, intendiamoci. E però da un quartetto così...
