Michael Leonhart Orchestra: The Normyn Suites
Gli eclettici sviluppi orchestrali di Michael Leonhart, tra maestosi affreschi evocativi e trascinanti momenti rock e soul, tornano a entusiasmarci con questo magistrale The Normyn Suites, dove la poetica della leggerezza convive con scelte di vivo impatto ritmico e timbrico. Le due forti propensioni musicale dell'autore sono ben bilanciate: quella impressionista (che ha caratterizzato opere ammalianti come Lovers di Nels Cline e il suo The Painted Lady Suite) e quella legata alla popular music, maturata nelle collaborazioni con Steely Dan, Vinicius Cantuaria, Brian Eno, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Mark Ronson, più decine di altri musicisti rock e soul. Altro aspetto di rilievo dell'album è la straordinaria concentrazione di grandi interpreti, ospiti in sontuosi organici orchestrali. Tra i principali ricordiamo Bill Frisell, Joshua Redman, Chris Potter, Elvis Costello, Nels Cline, Larry Goldings e Donny McCaslin.

Il percorso musicale presenta l'opera in due parti "The Normyn Suite" e altri sei brani di differente fattura (tre dei quali presenti come bonus tracks). Iniziamo a parlare di questi. Il brano d'apertura "Shut Him Down" è stato trasmesso in anteprima come video il 9 ottobre 2020 dal canale Qwest.tv e disponibile anche su YouTube. Com'è evidente è stato registrato in connessione remota e sull'album è presente in due versioni sempre cantante da Elvis Costello e dal rapper JSWISS ma con accompagnatori diversi. Quella del video è con Chris Potter al clarinetto mentre l'altra (posta in apertura) vede l'intervento di Joshua Redman. Orchestrazione acid jazz di forte impatto e un groove contagioso, perfettamente in linea con le ultime sintesi giovanili di Londra e Chicago. "Radio Is Everything" è un brano già pubblicato nell'ultimo disco di Costello Hey Clockface con la presenza di Leonhart alla tromba, Bill Frisell e Nels Cline alle chitarre: il cantautore britannico recita un testo un po' criptico ma musicalmente suggestivo sui rarefatti fondali dei partner. Ancora condiviso con Hey Clockface è "Newspaper Pane," brano di forte presa con Costello che canta sul serrato arrangiamento di Leonhart e la chitarra di Frisell. Gli ultimi due pezzi del disco vedono il debutto dell'organ quartet di Michael Leonhart (alla tromba) col notevole contributo di Donny McCaslin: due tributi a "Kenny Dorham" e "Wayne Shorter" in versione deliziosamente hard bop.

"The Normyn Suites" è definito dalla scrittrice Alexandra Horowitz nelle note di copertina un'elegia, un requiem ispirato alla vita e alla morte del cane femmina Normyn, inseparabile compagna dell'autore, che ha voluto ricordarla nel modo più consono a un compositore. I cinque movimenti della prima parte si snodano con affascinanti contrasti timbrici e ritmici, toccando il vertice nel lento ed evocativo "Nostalgia," dove la vicinanza al Gil Evans acustico è palpabile: soffici fondali sostengono i lunghi interventi di Jim Plugh al trombone e Walt Weiskopf al sax tenore. Il brano trova un analogo e magistrale corrispettivo nel tema che conclude la seconda parte della suite, "The Dunes of Cahoon Hollow," affresco timbrico in lenta espansione dalla toccante melodia, con la tromba del leader in evidenza. I precedenti cinque movimenti sono accomunati da una vena di nostalgico rimpianto, con i solisti in evidenza: in particolare l'organo di Larry Goldings in "May the Young Grow Old" e un magistrale Bill Frisell in "Waking from Sedation."

The Normyn Suites è uno dei dischi orchestrali più affascinanti e coinvolgenti degli ultimi anni. Un concentrato di suggestioni che non vorresti mai lasciare.
