Clayton Brothers: The New Song and Dance
Le intenzioni sono chiare fin dai due temi d'apertura: "Cha Cha Charleston," un brano ancheggiante dove la tromba di un sempre ispirato e preciso Terrell Stafford prende immediatamente la ribalta, e "Soul Tango," una sorta di tango trasversale, personalissimo, che si attorciglia attorno ad un tema cantabile. Meno effervescenti, ma comunque molto intriganti, le successive "Battle Circle" e "Terrell's Song," in cui Gerald Clayton sa creare un mood molto intimo su tempi lenti, ritagliando spazi per i propri interventi solistici tra le feritoie lasciate aperte da Stafford e dall'altro protagonista della sessione di registrazione, li saxofonista Jeff Clayton.
Sono da ballare anche la title track e "Chicago Bop Steppin,'" ispirato al tipico ballo della Windy City, mentre è pregevole il rifacimento di "They Won't Go When I Go" di Steve Wonder, con Jeff Clayton al flauto.
Arrangiamenti di grande respiro, tonalità maggiori e minori che si scambiano spesso di posto e precisi movimenti corali fanno di The New Song and Dance un album di spessore artistico e allo stesso tempo di grande presa.
