Joe McPhee - Peter Brötzmann - Kent Kessler - Michael Zerang: The Damage Is Done
Tutti componenti del poderoso tentetto chicagoano del musicista tedesco, i quattro sanno imporre alla musica direzioni sempre mutevoli, anche se nel solco di quella sonorità post-free che da sempre ne contraddistingue il lessico e che si nutre di torrenziali fiumi lavici che sgorgano dai sassofoni, di caotici momenti di insieme e liriche cesure.
Gran parte del primo disco è occupata dalla suite che dà il titolo al lavoro, "The Damage Is Done," costruita sull'ottimo contrasto tra il sassofono di Brötzmann e la pocket trumpet di McPhee, mentre nel secondo disco ci sono quattro distinte parti che svelano le diverse attitudini dei musicisti, compresa una poesia del dettaglio che talvolta sfugge nei momenti di concitazione collettiva.
Se in un certo senso si può dire che i progetti "americani" di Brötzmann hanno in parte contribuito a saldare quella irrisolta relazione fra l'eredità della new thing e l'improvvisazione europea, va anche sottolineato come questo avvenga sul terreno di un linguaggio che - pur mantenendo tutte le sue stimolanti potenzialità - in situazioni come questa non rischia oltre quanto sia abituato a rischiare.
E se dal vivo l'energia di questa splendida musica è un'onda d'urto che spesso è indimenticabile per chiunque, la ormai copiosa documentazione su disco rischia di fare contenti più gli appassionati già acquisiti che gli altri ascoltatori. Non ci stanchiamo di ricordarlo ai nostri lettori, così come non ci stanchiamo nemmeno di ascoltare questo quartetto.
