Dan Blake: The Aquarian Suite

L'iniziale "The Whistler" ha tutte le carte in regola per essere il classico brano di presentazione di un brillante quartetto neo bop, con tromba e sax che all'unisono si muovono eleganti sul ritmo elastico di contrabbasso e batteria. Ma poi, in modo quasi impercettibile, il fraseggio si fa più obliquo, la front-line sembra imboccare sentieri meno rassicuranti, il sostegno ritmico diventa più frastagliato e irregolare. I nove minuti del brano di apertura si trasformano così in liner notes particolari di The Aquarian Suite, l'ultima fatica discografica del sassofonista e compositore Dan Blake.

Il giovane musicista originario del New Jersey e residente a New York si muove infatti disinvoltamente tra collaborazioni straight-ahead (Danilo Perez ed Esperanza Spalding, tra gli altri) e maestri della musica totale come Anthony Braxton, con un interesse particolare per gli ensemble di musica da camera per i quali è apprezzato compositore (il brano "The Best of Intentions" ne è una significativa testimonianza).

The Aquarian Suite racchiude la sua visione musicale a trecentosessanta gradi con senso della misura, attenzione alla forma e gran relax esecutivo, fattori importanti nell'evitare strappi stilistici troppo vigorosi e offrire un'idea di continuità al flusso dei propri pensieri musicali. Che si dipanano tra delicati unisono, eleganti armonizzazioni, timide escursioni nell'atonalità, suggestioni minimaliste, prelibatezze timbriche e sane scorribande blues, vedi il coinvolgente epilogo.

Con lo stesso tipo di formazione del leggendario quartetto di Ornette Coleman, Blake ci presenta un lavoro che non ha certo la portata rivoluzionaria dello storico riferimento ma contiene molte idee interessanti di un musicista sicuramente curioso.
