Charles Lloyd: Tone Poem

by Eric Gudas
Charles Lloyd and The Marvels' April 2017 performance at UCLA's Royce Hall, with guest vocalist Lucinda Williams, was nothing but highlights--from Lloyd's dance moves across the stage as one or other of his bandmates soloed, to Williams' impassioned performances on such songs as Bob Dylan's Masters of War" and Jimi Hendrix's Angel." They also played a ...

Reuben Rogers

Reuben Rogers was imbued with both groove and spirit from birth. Raised in the Virgin Islands by parents who were both ministers, Rogers grew up playing gospel in church while absorbing the calypso and reggae rhythms of the islands. The discovery of jazz in his teens added the elements of freedom and improvisation to those innate qualities, creating the unique chemistry that would make Rogers one of the most distinctive and in- demand bassists in modern jazz. Rogers’ versatile mastery of both the acoustic and electric bass has led to opportunities on stages around the world alongside some of the music’s most renowned artists, including Charles Lloyd, Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Redman, Tomasz Stanko, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Roberts, Nicholas Payton, Mulgrew Miller, Jackie McLean and Dianne Reeves, among many others. The range of styles and approaches represented by that partial list reflects the diversity and adaptability of Rogers’ virtuosic and communicative gifts

by Mike Jurkovic
A staggering statement of will and love, 8: Kindred Spirits (Live at The Lobero) big bangs from thin air with Dreamweaver," a twenty-one minute excursion that doubles down on Charles Lloyd's casually grand schemata that anything and everything goes, that as long as we're all in the music's same head space we can know peace. It's ...

AkBank Jazz Festival 2019

by Francesco Martinelli
AkBank Jazz Festival Istanbul, Turkey October 18-25 2019 I arrived in Istanbul during the world-wide outrage that followed the United States pull-out from Syria and the consequent military intervention by Turkey. The new humongous airport looked rather empty compared to the crowded spaces of the old one; the trip to ...
Helen Sung: Sung with Words

by Angelo Leonardi
Jazzkaar 2019

by Martin Longley
Jazzkaar Tallinn, Estonia April 23-28, 2019 Towards the second half of Jazzkaar, there was an invasion of starry Americans, overwhelming the normally quite striking wealth of indigenous Estonian talent. As ever, the fundamental structure of this 10-dayer revolved around its two main stages in the Telliskivi Creative City, Vaba Lava ...
