Jaga Jazzist

Jaga Jazzist has become something of a musical phenomenon in Norway since they started 15 years ago. Not only is this 9 piece instrumental band regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative in Norway, the members are all involved in other musical projects and have in one way or another contributed to almost every significant recording to come out of that part of the world in the last few years. It has been this strong involvement with different projects, and different musical styles and sounds which is the key to the unique sound of Jaga Jazzist. With no boundaries and an arsenal that includes trumpet, trombone, electric guitars, bass, tuba, bass clarinet, saxophones, keyboards, vibraphone and a rack of electronics, Jaga Jazzist create timeless music

Read "Norwegian Road Trip, Part 4: Oslo and an Interview with Jan Erik Kongshaug" reviewed by John Kelman

Author's Note: Jan Erik Kongshaug, owner and recording engineer at Rainbow Studios, Oslo, passed away on November 5, 2019. Beyond his best-known work on hundreds of recordings for the lauded ECM Records label in collaboration with label head/producer Manfred Eicher, Kongshaug's studio and engineering, mixing and mastering work has garnered significant international acclaim. Still, Rainbow continues ...

Kit Downes: Dreamlife of Debris

Read "Dreamlife of Debris" reviewed by Karl Ackermann

Kit Downes' ECM debut marked a substantial departure from his earlier recordings with saxophonist Tomas Challenger. Wedding Music (Loop Records, 2013) and Vyamanikal (Slip Imprint, 2016) were rhythmically complex with abstruse melodies that tended toward repetitive patterns and drones. With his ECM title Obsidian (2018), Downes, still on organ, worked in a more solidly constructed environment, ...

Hong Kong International Jazz Festival 2019 Hong Kong City Hall; Hong Kong Park Hong Kong September 22, 25-27 We've long been told that jazz is a world language, but regional dialects are becoming an increasingly louder part of the conversation. Jazz Crescendos Galore!

Read "Jazz Crescendos Galore!" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

When creating a radio playlist one always has to make sure to sequence songs in a meaningful way. The dynamics of their interaction is critical. There should be not too many fast pieces played back to back, nor too many ballads one after the other. Fast and slow, soft and loud should be sequenced in a ...

Double your Norwegian jazz pleasure: listen to our companion Norwegian jazz mixtape while reading this article. Far too many people talk about the Norwegian scene as being “interesting because it's so exotic." Those who think so, have in mind its “Nordic Tone," that distinctive mood which evokes snow, mountains and icy fjords. This kind ...

PunktFestival 2017

Read "PunktFestival 2017" reviewed by Luca Vitali

Punkt Festival Kristiansand, Norvegia Varie sedi 31.8-2.9.2017 Come sempre Punkt è un festival fuori dall'ordinario e all'insegna dell'imprevisto e dell'imprevedibile. Una sorta di Industria 4.0 della musica: fuori dal “circolo" dei tour estivi, tipico dei festival jazz, e poco interessato a fotografare il passato e il presente, è invece molto attento ...

All About Jazz needs your support

Donate
All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
