Another (Mostly) Sax Attack

Read "Another (Mostly) Sax Attack" reviewed by Marc Cohn

The doctor had a sax attack this week having 'overdosed' on the just-arrived, absolutely gorgeous (and mostly previously unreleased) Paul Desmond box from Mosaic (and I'm more of a 'Phil Woods kind of guy'!). This week we return with a “Bitches Brew -Day 2" and a “compare and contrast" between two Wayne Shorter tunes (from Super Nova) versus Miles Davis (from Water Babies). But of course, there's more. We moon over Anita O'Day (a centennial warmup) and go to a hotel with Kenny Clarke keeping time on a phone book ...

Avery Sharpe: 400: An African American Musical Portrait

Read "400: An African American Musical Portrait" reviewed by Troy Dostert

In 1619 the White Lion, a British privateer which had just successfully raided a Spanish slave ship, arrived in the Jamestown colony with its contraband cargo of twenty-some African slaves.
