Brad Mehldau

Born:

Pianist Brad Mehldau has recorded and performed extensively since the early 1990s. Mehldau’s most consistent output over the years has taken place in the trio format. Starting in 1996, his group released a series of five records on Warner Bros. entitled The Art of the Trio. Mehldau also has a solo piano recording entitled Elegiac Cycle, and a record called Places that includes both solo piano and trio songs. Elegiac Cycle and Places might be called “concept” albums. They are made up exclusively of original material and have central themes that hover over the compositions. Other Mehldau recordings include Largo, a collaborative effort with the innovative musician and producer Jon Brion, and Anything Goes—a trio outing with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy.

Brad Mehldau: Finding Gabriel

Read "Finding Gabriel" reviewed by Emmanuel Di Tommaso

Jonathan Kreisberg: A Spirit Captured in Constant Motion

Read "Jonathan Kreisberg: A Spirit Captured in Constant Motion" reviewed by Friedrich Kunzmann

Over 3,000 miles separate New York City from Europe. A distance that feels a little smaller every day—traveled in a virtual way in less than a second, even physically in a matter of only roughly 7 hours. Musicians especially are prone to crossing the pond rather frequently. New York-based guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg tends to make the ...

Sara Gazarek: Thirsty Ghost

Read "Thirsty Ghost" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Darek Oleszkiewicz: Rolls-Royce Groovin'

Read "Darek Oleszkiewicz: Rolls-Royce Groovin'" reviewed by Jim Worsley

Inspiring greatness has long been the two-word association with the grand luxury of Rolls-Royce. Britain's entry into automobile finery has thus become benchmark terminology. To hear bassist Darek Oleszkiewicz interact, navigate, and improvise with today's finest jazz musicians is to understand why he has been deemed the Rolls-Royce of the modern day upright. Carrying the torch ...

Chase Baird: A Life Between

Read "A Life Between" reviewed by Jerome Wilson

Chase Baird is a New York-based saxophonist who combines jazz with other musical genres. His work on this CD can sport, at various times, the melodicism of classical music, the sharp angles of progressive rock or the blunt thrust of funk. A very talented group of musicians helps him fulfill his vision here, including Brad Mehldau ...

Joe Martin: Etoilee

Read "Etoilee" reviewed by Neri Pollastri
