Ted Piltzecker: Steppe Forward
Neanche quaranta minuti, comunque ben concentrati, per quello che è stato il vibrafonista negli ultimi gruppi del compianto pianista George Shearing.
Steppe Forward è un lavoro registrato con la tecnica della sovraincisione. Il leader è infatti presente anche al pianoforte e alle percussioni. In scaletta troviamo composizioni originali del leader (tranne "Nica's Dream" di Horace Silver).
Il tutto fila liscio ma senza lasciare il segno. La cosa più interessante del disco sono gli arrangiamenti e le sovraincisioni, fatte in modo pulito ma che non rendono giustizia al Piltzecker pianista, (auto-)relegato al ruolo di collante armonico senza che tuttavia questo tenga insieme la seduta di registraione. Manca quindi il guizzo in avanti, il qualcosa in più che rende il disco superiore alla media, nonostante ci siano strumentisti di livello, come il giovane sassofonista Sam Dillon e Harvie S al contrabbasso su "He Sent an Angel".
