Stanley Jordan: State of Nature
Stanley Jordan si è un po’ perso negli anni novanta, fra ingenuità artistiche ed encomiabile desiderio di mettersi al servizio degli altri e si è dedicato intensamente a progetti legati all’utilizzo della musica in chiave terapeutica. Con questo nuovo album vuole riaffermare il suo amore per la natura e alterna riletture interessanti di brani molto noti a piccoli bozzetti che mantengono vivo lo spirito naif del personaggio per poi passare ad alcuni brani originali decisamente più riusciti, come per esempio l’iniziale “A Place in Space”.
Il nucleo di base è costituito da Jordan (che suona anche il pianoforte e spesso lo fa alternandosi con la chitarra, senza ricorrere a tecniche di sovraincisione), dall’ottimo bassista Charnett Moffett e dal batterista David Haynes. In alcuni brani si aggiungono altri musicisti fra i quali è doveroso citare il batterista Kenwood Dennard e il suonatore di sitar Jay Kishor, un musicista molto vicino a Jordan anche da un punto di vista filosofico.
Fra i vari brani si segnalano come ben riusciti “All Blues” di Miles Davis, “Song for My Father” di Horace Silver e la conclusiva “Steppin’ Out”, un brano portato al successo negli anni novanta da Joe Jackson. La musica è sostanzialmente ben eseguita e le divagazioni di Jordan si innestano su una solida base ritmica che riesce a digerire anche i salti più bislacchi. Certe incursioni chitarristiche sono degne di nota e lasciano intravedere possibilità ancora inespresse che una solida disciplina esecutiva potrebbero far emergere in maniera ancora più convincente.
