Carolyn Hume: Solo Piano Works

Dopo quattro CD registrati per la Leo Records con il batterista Paul May, Carolyn Hume debutta con la sempre difficile e rischiosa sfida del piano-solo. Solo Piano Works si rivela una boccata d’ossigeno contro il “logorio della vita moderna“, contro l’assillo ritmico della quotidianità, una cura disintossicante, verrebbe da dire, contro l’accerchiamento e l’invasione dei rumori.

Ma non è né l’aria frizzante e tonificante del mattino, né quella gioiosa e spensierata della primavera, piuttosto quella notturna, crepuscolare e un po’ malinconica, come già dai titoli dei brani la Hume ci fa intendere. Il suo pianismo lavora per sottrazione, privilegiando i vuoti ai pieni, i bassi agli alti, l’indolente e misurato procedere al supersonico fraseggio, il registro medio-grave ai trilli.

Ascoltando i dieci brani del disco, sostanzialmente delle libere improvvisazioni, si entra un mondo sonoro che sollecita la meditazione, privilegia le sfumature, lavora su microvariazioni tonali e ritmiche, su sequenze ipnotiche, ma soprattutto esalta le pause e i silenzi.

E alla fine ci si sente in pace con il mondo, con un latente desiderio di ...un piccolo rumore.
