Elton Dean – Hugh Hopper - Hoppy Kamiyama - Yoshida Tatsuya: Soft Mountain

Nel 2003 il saxofonista Elton Dean e il bassista Hugh Hopper erano in tour in Giappone, assieme ad Allan Hodsworth e a John Marshall, con il progetto Soft Works e il bassista decise di contattare il noto tastierista giapponese Hoppy Kamiyama per programmare un incontro in studio capace di generare materiale da pubblicare.

Il tastierista non si lasciò scappare l’occasione, propose di imbarcare anche il batterista Yoshida Tatsuya (che Hopper aveva già conosciuto a Londra in occasione di un concerto del gruppo Acid Mothers Temple, un progetto collegato ai Gong del vecchio amico Daevid Allen) e i quattro musicisti si trovarono negli studi Gok di Tokyo per incidere due lunghe improvvisazioni. Senza discussioni, senza accordi, senza preparazione. Semplicemente lasciando uscire la musica, lasciando scorrere l’ispirazione. Con una buona bevuta al bar a fare da intermezzo fra i due set.

Visti i buoni rapporti con Hopper e con tutto l’entourage dei Soft Machine, la Hux Records non si è lasciata scappare l’occasione di pubblicare questo materiale, una sorta di testamento epico del saxofonista Elton Dean che nel frattempo, giusto un anno fa, ci ha lasciato.

La musica si muove con grande passione nelle due lunghe suite, toccando aree tematiche ben strutturate che lasciano davvero stupefatti, pensando alle circostanze nelle quali questo incontro si è materializzato. Evidentemente i linguaggi comuni della musica moderna sono sufficientemente consolidati e stratificati anche in musicisti che arrivano da esperienze e mondi molto diversi fra loro. E il livello di conoscenza di questa musica sbocciata come un fiore nel deserto quasi quarant'anni fa è davvero universale, capace di prescindere dai confini geografici e dai mille oceani che cercano di mettersi di mezzo.

I sax di Elton Dean sono spesso in primo piano, impegnati in lunghi voli zigzaganti, carichi di fragranze sulfuree, che abbracciano un arco narrativo sempre ben percepibile, anche nei momenti nei quali le forzature timbriche si fanno segno di fuoco indelebile. Le tastiere di Hoppy Kamiyama sono colme di immaginazione, precise e dilatate quanto basta per innescare il turbocompressore nascosto nella catena d effetti di uno Hugh Hopper elettrico e lisergico come non mai. La batteria di Yoshida Tatsuya è sempre incalzante ed impetuosa e fa da propellente carico di ottani per le scorribande di questi quattro cavalieri che non si fermano di fronte alle asperità e si intrufolano in territori soleggiati dove l’aridità del suolo è contrapposta alla rigogliosità della vegetazione. Una cosa improbabile in natura ma evidentemente possibile nei mondi virtuali che questa musica sa così bene evocare.
