Ottantatre anni e non sentirli! Suona ancora tremendamente bene, Charlie Mariano, uno dei grandi vecchi, e forse anche uno dei tanti, troppi tesori nascosti del jazz. Qui lo troviamo in compagnia della sezione ritmica franco-svizzera Cholet-Känzig-Papaux, musicisti forse cresciuti ascoltando i dischi di Mariano e che qui (le magie del jazz!) vedono annullata qualunque differenza anagrafica e generazionale.

C'è predilezione per i mezzi tempi, quando non per autentiche ballads, mentre il sax del leader, come di consueto, passa in pochi attimi dal flautato più suggestivo al grido più straziante, con un'asciuttezza ed una consequenzialità melodica sbalorditive. E poi c'è quel modo particolarissimo di porgere la melodia, spostando impercettibilmente (ma assai percettibilmente!) gli accenti, introducendo micro-pause, staccando le note... In breve, appropriandosene per interpretarla. Si ascolti, ad esempio, un evergreen come "Black Orpheus", qui riproposto in una versione molto fedele all'originale, ma al tempo stesso personalissima.

E poi c'è il trio, decisamente all'altezza della situazione, che attribuisce una sensibilità ed una connotazione europea a brani (un mix di standard e di composizioni originali), che si tuffano direttamente nella tradizione americana.
