Mary Halvorson - Kirk Knuffke - Matt Wilson: Sifter
Meno conosciuto è il trombettista/cornettista Kirk Knuffke [già nella NuBlu Orchestra "condotta" dal compianto Butch Morris], mentre Matt Wilson è batterista di grandissima esperienza e fantasia. Sono i tre vertici del trio Sifter, il cui disco si muove tra efficaci spunti tematici, aromi rock e contagi minimali.
Sifter è un disco che entra rapidamente nelle orecchie, che si fa canticchiare o fischiettare, per tacer della voglia di muovere un po' le gambe! Chi è abituato alla Halvorson più introspettiva e contorta, si sorprenderà piacevolmente a vederla accanirsi su un riff o addirittura swingare come ad esempio nella bella "Free Jazz Echonomics". Knuffke è solista divertente e incisivo, che, anche quando si muove con intento esplorativo, non perde mai di vista l'immediatezza del risultato, assecondato alla perfezione da Wilson, con cui collabora da anni.
Potrebbe sembrare un capitolo collaterale della discografia della Halvorson [e magari lo sarà, dal momento che la bionda chitarrista sembra avere idee chiare e energie freschissime per le proprie progettualità], ma con questa sua aria quasi da estate elettrica, Sifter ci piace parecchio!
