Jeremy Pelt and Wired: Shock Value: Live at Smoke
Accompagnato da un torrido Al Street alla chitarra, da un turbolento Frank LoCrasto alle tastiere (prevalentemente organo Hammond e piano elettrico Fender) e dai due ritmi Gavin Fallow e Dana Hawkins, il trombettista soffia con vigore ed energia, sempre bene in sintonia coi suoi compari e con il pubblico. La scaletta del concerto ricorda un po’ la routine di Miles Davis che per tutti gli anni ottanta ha eseguito un blues di impianto piuttosto tradizionale come secondo brano dei suoi concerti. Una occasione per lasciare spazio alla chitarra, per far carburare bene la ritmica, per scaldare a dovere il pubblico. Cose che ritroviamo puntualmente qui. E la decisione di Pelt di far passare la sua tromba attraverso il diabolico pedale wha-wha, che mandò in confusione tanti critici jazz negli anni settanta, aggiunge un ulteriore elemento di apparentamento.
Proseguendo nel concerto, il paragone con Miles si attenua un po’ e Jeremy Pelt se ne va giustamente per la sua strada. Una strada fatta di curiosità per scenari che si alternano senza fretta, toccando suggestioni mainstream, climi latineggianti, derive fusion appena accennate. Emergono in maniera discreta le influenze di Lee Morgan e Freddie Hubbard. La voce di Becca Stevens si aggiunge sul palco al quintetto per una versione molto dilatata del brano “Cause”, carico di suggestioni folk e profumi orientaleggianti. Una sorta di mantra moderno nel quale la tromba di Jeremy Pelt aggiunge un prezioso contributo.
