Madeleine Peyroux: Secular Hymns
Tali felici vibrazioni regalateci dal trittico di brani iniziali non trovano conferma negli immediatamente successivi "Everything I Do Gonh Be Funky" e "If The Sea Was Whiskey," un po' leggerini, laddove "Hard Times Come Again No More," song addirittura di metà Ottocento (di Stephen Foster), riguadagna eleganza e felicità ispirativa, instaurando quella sorta di ping pong tra brani più esili (i dispari: "Hello Babe," risalente ai primissimi anni Quaranta, e "Shout Sister Shout," inciso nel 1931 dalle Boswell Sisters con l'orchestra dei fratelli Dorsey) e altri più rimarchevoli (i pari: "More Time" di Linton Kwesi Johnson, anno di grazia 1998, e "Trampin," un traditional arrangiato per l'occasione dalla stessa Peyroux, nonché già inciso, fra gli altri, da Patti Smith, che nel 2004 ci ha intitolato un intero album) che contrassegna di fatto la restante parte del disco (piuttosto breve: 33 minuti e spiccioli).
