Nels Cline, Julian Lage: Room

Uno, Nels Cline, è un alchimista della sei corde, strumento che ha espanso e portato oltre i limiti come pochi, trasfigurandolo in una portentosa opportunità per viaggi ultragalattici della mente e del corpo. L'altro, Julian Lage, è un giovane emergente che partito dalla tradizione della chitarra jazz sta allargando i propri orizzonti grazie anche alla frequentazione di compagnie eccellenti (come la recente residency allo Stone ha confermato grazie ad una serie di collaborazioni che andavano da John Zorn a Fred Hersch, passando da Kenny Wollesen, Ben Wendel, Scott Colley Jesse Harris e, ovviamente, lo stesso Cline).

Il luogo dell'incontro è una stanza -solo virtuale?—dove, imbracciando le rispettive chitarre d'epoca, prende vita una conversazione fatta di note, di invenzioni, di suoni, di idee, il tutto in presa diretta e senza sovraincisioni. Room è set essenziale ma non disadorno, dove i virtuosismi sono celati dietro un minimalismo ingannevole, che rivela le sue preziosità solo all'ascoltatore partecipe e fiducioso, trafitto dalle emozioni, dai silenzi, dalle pause, dai riverberi, dagli ammiccamenti.

Musica dalla purezza di un diamante, impossibile da etichettare nel suo rimandare sfaccettature folk e blues, echi cameristici, cadenze jazz, deviazioni contemporanee. Sorprende l'estrema disinvoltura con la quale i due musicisti trattano una scrittura spesso scorbutica, sorprende la confidenza che si viene a instaurare tra due personalità artistiche così differenti, non sorprende l'ottimo risultato favorito anche dall'assidua pratica di entrambi con la difficile arte del duo.
