«Micah Thomas ha uno stile unico —ha detto Fred Hersch-e tutti gli strumenti necessari per dare un contributo importante al mondo del pianoforte jazz». Per Aaron Parks «è uno dei musicisti più eccitanti della sua generazione».
Non sono parole di circostanza. Dopo il debutto a suo nome con l'album Tide, inciso nel 2020 a soli 22 anni e il Piano Solo del 2022 anche la stampa specializzata ha espresso superlativi giudizi sul giovane pianista di Columbus già membro stabile del quartetto di Immanuel Wilkins.

Questo nuovo lavoro è un significativo passo avanti verso la piena maturità artistica, una sintesi tra alta padronanza tecnica e personale definizione espressiva. Come nel debutto, Micah torna al piano trio confermando il solido bassista Dean Torrey e introducendo il batterista di Detroit Kayvon Gordon, che si rivela un partner essenziale col suo drumming insinuante e dalla sottile concitazione.

Le nove composizioni originali del disco si sviluppano, quasi tutte, tra i sette e i dieci minuti, caratterizzandosi per il fitto interplay tra i partner e il pianoforte dal raffinato gusto armonico, la timbrica luminosa e l'incalzante lucidità del fraseggio.
Molti brani iniziano con l'esposizione di un breve tema, la cui linea melodica viene ripresa nell'improvvisazione in fantasiosi percorsi di rilettura e trasformazione che possono assumere le forme di un concitato e avvincente loop (come nel finale di "Look At The Birds").
Per apprezzare al massimo il fantasioso lavoro di Micah e dei partner si possono confrontare le due versioni di "Little Doctor," brano scritto per la sorella Hannah. Ma i momenti intensi sono più d'uno. D'ispirazione religiosa "Sacred Memory" è un percorso di lenta e rarefatta bellezza. In "Troubled Mind" domina la libera improvvisazione ma non mutano la raffinatezza armonica, il tocco raffinato e l'equilibrio del flusso narrativo. Ricco di suggestioni è "Eros," che passa da un inizio leggermente danzante a una lunga sequenza concitata, per concludersi in forma liricamente iterativa.

Con quest'opera di alto spessore Micah Thomas si conferma uno dei talenti più inventivi di questi anni.
