Hugo Siegmeth: Red Onions - Celebrating Sidney Bechet

Questo Red Onions - Celebrating Sidney Bechet del trentaseienne sassofonista tedesco (ma rumeno di nascita) Hugo Siegmeth, è un disco che riappacifica con il mainstream. Come appare evidente dal titolo, il lavoro è dedicato a Sidney Bechet, uno dei più rappresentativi simboli della storia del jazz, pioniere della sua diffusione in Europa, ma anche di quello strumento fino a qualche decennio fa così poco diffuso, qual è il sax soprano. E di Bechet Siegmeth riprende buona parte del repertorio (oltre a composizioni dello stesso creolo, figurano brani che egli era solito suonare, come il classico "Summertime"), ma anche il modo immediato, sentito, di interpretarlo. Il risultato è di assoluto rispetto, anche perché Siegmeth si palesa strumentista di grande espressività e misura, ma anche sapiente bandleader.

I tre membri "stabili" del suo gruppo, infatti, svolgono tutti un lavoro eccellente, mostrando ottime qualità individuali, e soprattutto interagendo in modo classico, ma ineccepibile. Così, la rivisitazione dei brani della tradizione mainstream risulta avere un equilibrio ottimale, senza sporgersi né dal lato della pedissequa rilettura museale, né da quello della forzata e falsante "modernizzazione".

Ne sono riuscitissimi esempi la weiliana "September Song", l'arcinota "Petite Fleur" (probabilmentee la più famosa composizione di Bechet) e l'ellingtoniana "The Mooche". Ma anche "Treat It Gentle", originale ballad dello stesso Siegmeth, entra organicamente nel repertorio, mostrando l'abilità dell'artista anche come compositore.

Né l'aggiunta al quartetto, in alcune tracce, di Geoff Goodman alla chitarra e al banjo, o del Modern String Quartet, modifica questo eccellente equilibrio; anzi, favorisce l’esibizione del tradizionale senso dei brani (nel caso della presenza del banjo in quelli di origine popolare) o l’esaltazione della loro complessa struttura (come nella presenza degli archi in “The Mooche”).

Complessivamente, dunque, un disco davvero eccellente, che ricorda con gradito stupore quanto piacere può donare l’uso intelligente della semplicità.
