James Brandon Lewis: Radiant Imprints
Chad Taylor l'arte del duo la conosce bene, eccome, (Chicago Underground basta e avanza) questo porta la comunicazione e l'interazione tra i due a livelli altissimi. Cavalcate dionisiache e furori interpretativi -come il riferimento a Interstellar Space con Rashied Ali avrebbe potuto far supporre -sono banditi nelle tracce presenti in Radiant Imprints. Il duo privilegia piuttosto l'intensità interpretativa coniugata ad un'esecuzione fluida e rilassata.
Si scava in profondità, si colgono e si espandono frammenti di pensiero, si fluttua in una dimensione dove spiritualità, sanguigne pulsazioni e metafisica linearità trovano un magico punto d'incontro. In «With Sorrow Lonnie» e «First Born», Taylor suona la mbira sollecitando al meglio il lato gentile, soulful di Lewis (ah, quel richiamo a «Lonnie's Lament» è da brividi). Nei brani rimanenti i suoi piatti e i suoi tamburi interagiscono in modo magistrale con le intense evoluzioni del sax in un gioco delle parti che si trasforma in canto libero e unitario.
Radiant Imprints diventa così momento di riflessione sulla propria arte, rivendicazione della centralità afroamericana nella musica improvvisata, manifestazione di rigore stilistico mai asettico ma pregno di umori e di palpitante vitalità. Insomma, un piccolo classico.
