The Brooklyn Repertory Ensemble: Pragmatic Optimistim
L’orchestra formata da diciassette elementi funziona come un meccanismo ben oliato, con la sezione fiati che si muove disinvolta, con un discreto dinamismo delle diverse masse sonore, con una successione di assoli sufficientemente pertinenti anche se non brillano personalità di particolare rilievo. Ma se nei brani originali gli arrangiamenti sono piacevolmente leggeri, pur non evidenziando i necessari vuoti e pieni, né giochi di luci e ombre, quando si passa agli standard rasentano l’imbarazzante.
La francescana semplicità di “Blowin’ in the Wind“ viene sostituita da una versione caramellosa e arricchita da orpelli assolutamente fuori luogo. Il groove potente e ammaliante di “Stolen Moments“ viene appiattito da un’atmosfera easy listening buona per ascensori e hall d’albergo. E la sacra, storica pregnanza di “Body and Soul“ si trasforma in una banale canzone da piano-bar da far rizzare i capelli.
Disco che promette e non mantiene e nel quale il pragmatico ottimismo del titolo rimane nelle intenzioni degli autori.
