John Wolf Brennan: Pictures In A Gallery
Tutto questo per dire, semplicemente e molto apertamente, che questo album mi è piaciuto molto. La musica in esso contenuta è sempre consequenziale ai quadri con cui Brennan si confronta. Consequenziale, mai descrittiva. Il quadro è infatti simultaneamente oggetto e soggetto dell'interesse del pianista. E' assente ma, al tempo stesso, fortissimamente presente nei brani.
Brennan ci mette a contatto con i dipinti (e, nell'ultima parte dell'album, con la poesia) attraverso frammenti, atmosfere, impressioni, associazioni. Chiamatele affinità elettive, se volete. Alcune ovvie ed evidenti (basta scorrere i titoli - a cominciare da quello del CD - per averne un'idea), altre più sottili e percepibili solo dall'ascoltatore più avveduto (e chissà quante ne ha mancate il sottoscritto!). Sempre con un tratto di leggerezza e di affettuosa ironia.
Integrazione fondamentale all'ascolto dell'album, il libretto che accompagna il CD riporta sia le immagini dei quadri su cui Brennan stende le sue pennellate sonore, sia i versi di Pushkin (nella traduzione inglese).
