Thomas Linger: Out In It
For his first release as a leader, pianist Thomas Linger has surrounded himself with first rate musicians: guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Yasushi Nakamura, each of whom share Linger's commitment to a reflective approach. All of the numbers are originals by Linger, with covers of "Lush Life" by Billy Strayhorn and "Woofin'and Tweetin" by Art Farmer. The album's strong sound comes in no small part because the recording was completed, in July 2021, at the Van Gelder studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey under the direction of Maureen Sickler.

The only trio track is "Mercurial Behemoth" with Linger's playing informed by McCoy Tyner. Using strong percussive riffs, Linger brings a propulsive flair. The title track has plenty of vitality with Linger and Bernstein demonstrating full-bodied staccato phrasing. Not to be outdone, Farnsworth chimes in with an earthy drum solo.

"Lush Life" is a solo piano showcase. With no cover from the rhythm section, Linger ranges over the keyboard, making some rich music. "Woofin' and Tweetin'" is a no nonsense twelve bar blues with Bernstein carrying the weight with aplomb. Linger's efforts are spry and sharp with Nakamura adding to the thickened atmosphere. All in all a swinging and cohesive debut release.
